You can renew the contract with an already signed player, renew up to 3 years.

You can also sign a new contract with a player whose contract is already expired but still on your team.  Players can stay no more than 4 rounds after contract has expired. New contract lasts up to 2 years.

You can fire players at any time, but you need to pay the contract period's remaining wages.
